21 May Balloons with messages on for Dementia Action Week
Worthington Lake – Dementia Action week
This week Worthington Lake started supporting Dementia Action week yesterday by releasing yellow and blue balloons from the home with messages attached to each balloon, the messages were from residents and staff members each with a personal thought, each balloon has the Facebook address to tag the home if any are found, one of the residents at Worthington Lake said she released balloons in a similar way many years ago and it was found in Poland!
Worthington Lake opened their doors this Spring and are proud to boast being the first home of it’s kind in the North west bringing the best quality of Dementia care to Wigan.
Worthington Lake Manager Ann Sheward and staff have the ethos of living life to the full and do not believe in restrictions or institutionalised care.
Worthington Lake is designed around freedom with unrestricted access to the great outdoors, with communal planting areas and an out door gym over looking the picturesque Lake Douglas.
The building layout promotes quality of life, with kitchenettes where house members are able to continue to do all of the everyday tasks, they might have done in their own home such as baking, laundry or washing up.
Studies have shown that continuing regular chores and staying focused on a task from beginning helps ease the anxieties for people living with Dementia.
Worthington Lake is on track to be awarded a gold accreditation from Sterling University following the years of research and planning which has gone in to the new build to make it a unique home for people living with Dementia.
Staffing ratio at Worthington Lake is 1:3 which allows for a much more person-centred model of care.
Ann Sheward say’s “We had a vison of home where people living with Dementia can flourish and that vison is now coming together, we are very proud to be the first home in the North west on track to receive the Gold accreditation and will never tire of doing what we can to make Worthington Lake a home where our residents can flourish, we have a resident who recently moved in to Worthington Lake and it is clear from the way Betty smiles and acts now that living in a home without restrictions has had a positive impact on her already.”
